Parenting Politics

Anytime you get a group of moms together, the topic will eventually turn to children and parenting. You'll begin to hear questions like: When did your child stop using a pacifier? What kind of music do you allow your child to listen to? Do you believe in spanking your child? Do you co-sleep or make them stay in their own bed?

It can be tricky to succesfully navigate the waters of parenting politics without offending someone. There are so many different ideas out there about what is best for a child, and deciding which of these ideas will work best for your family is a personal decision. So what do you do when you find yourself in the middle of this type of conversation? Here are a few ideas:

  • Recognize that there will be differences in parenting styles among your friends, and that it's okay
  • Agree to disagree (sometimes a parent has a really good reason for their choice that others might not understand)
  • Don't be afraid to say if a topic makes you uncomfortable or is too personal to discuss.
  • If your child questions why others are allowed to do something and they are not, use it as a teachable moment. Each family has to find what works for them, and different doesn't always mean it's wrong.

What ways have you found to deal with parenting politics?

Baby Toddler & Preschooler Class begins soon

Kindermusik with Christa Beck in Tarentum is pleased to announce our winter mini session at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Edgewood Road, New Kensington. Thursdays, Feb 11 - March 11 at 10:30 am, join our Family Music class.

ABC Music and Me unit Up In the Sky, features a story about a boy who wants to take over the reins of the family kite. Grab a scarf and imitate the up and down crouching, reaching and running used to fly a kite!

Along with an accompanying parent or caregiver, children meet weekly for a 45 minute class and enjoy singing, moving, listening and interacting socially, and playing simple instruments. Exploration time encourages a child's discovery of specially designed instruments, textures, sounds and movements. Language skills are fostered with singing, sound imitation, and vocal play. Story time encourages emergent literacy skills, and creative dancing affirms a child's urge to move!

Special family pricing for the 5 week class: $65 for the first child, $4o for a second, $20 for the third child in the family. Children under 11 months are free.

Why Kindermusik is right for your child

Price. Kindermusik is an investment that prepares a child for a lifelong love of learning and music. It's more than a once a week class - it's an experience with materials that can be used 24/7 at home to help make parenting easier (and grandparenting, uncl-ing, aunt-ing, nanny-ing and so on!)
So many preschool offerings, so little time. Yes there are so many choices these days. But Kindermusik offers something that few, if any other classes for preschoolers provide - an oppontunity for continuous semester-after-semester learning in a familiar environment. Even if a teacher or location changes, the format and rituals of a Kindermusik class will bring comfort to both parents and young learners. The advantage is in the depth of learning this kind of familiarity makes available. Instead of always adjusting to a new class or activity, the child has the opportunity to really grow and develop in all areas, including creativity, leadership, and confidence.

My child is getting music in other places. Gladly, music permeates the preschooler’s world. The number one advantage of Kindermusik is the involvement of the parent in class or sharing time and at home. The At Home Materials provide the ideas and tools that help the parent incorporate music throughout the week. These Kindermusik moments both in class and at home provide cherished bonding and together moments so often pre-empted by busy lives. Music in other places rarely supplies the expert knowledge and research that supports the power of music and movement in a child’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. Said in another way, the only way parent get the expert and her FOLs is by enrolling with a Kindermusik program!
